5) To be more precise, determine the ideal length of the top tube. Here’s how to do it:

– stand with your back to the wall;

– measure the distance from the fingertips to the clavicle;

– measure from your crotch to the pit on your neck;

– add two resulting numbers to each other and divide by 2;

– add 4 to this number.

Now you have the right length of the top tube for you.

*Example: Imagine that the length of your hand is 24, and the length of the body is 25.

50/2 = 25.

25 + 4 = 29.

Thus, 29 is the needed length of the top tube, based on your size.

 

Part 2 of 3: How to size a mountain bike and to make a right choice.

 

1) Check out this table with recommendations. Now you know the required size, so check whether it is consistent with the overall size of the bicycle. There is a single size base, in spite of slight differences depending on the manufacturer.

XS: 13-14 inches (height 152 – 162 cm)

S: 14-16 inches (height 162 – 170 cm)

M: 16-18 inches (height 170 – 177 cm)

L: 18-20 inches (height 177 – 185 cm)

XL: 20-22 inches (height more than 185 cm)

– attach the end of the tape measure to the place where the pedal crank is attached to the bike;

– stretch the tape measure to the seat height, which has been measured on the inside of the legs;

– loosen the bolt that holds the seatpost with a wrench;

– spin the seatpost up and down until it snaps into the desired position;

– tighten the bolt using a wrench.

 

2) Adjust the steering wheel:

– loosen the bolt at the base of the steering wheel (use a standard wrench, turning it to the left);

– raise or lower the steering wheel in the most comfortable position;

– tighten the wheel.

 

3) Adjust the seat tilt.

It is better if the seat is completely smooth. Few people prefer to tilt the seat up or down, basically everybody rides on a flat seat. It is important to remember two things:

– tilt the seat up or down so that your pelvis is on the same level when you are sitting on the bike;

– tilt the seat so that you are not slipping forward or backward while driving.

 

4) Test your installation.

You would not buy a car without a test drive, would you?

When you are checking your mountain bike, your hips should not turn, you should not have much pull hand, you should not distort in different directions, there should not be even a slight feeling of discomfort. You can check your bike as follows:

– sit on the bike;

– make sure you wear special shoes;

– place one foot on the pedal is lowered;

– your knee should be slightly bent and the heel should confidently stand on the pedal surface;
